The Sackets Harbor Vocal Arts Ensemble and Orchestra, under the direction of Richard Probert, returns this season to present a concert celebrating American choral masterpieces. Included in the program will be works by American composers Aaron Copland, Randall Thompson, Earl Robinson, Howard Hanson, and William Dawson. With titles including Testament of Freedom, Ballad for Americans, Song of Democracy, and A Lincoln Portrait, and texts by Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Francis Scott Key, and Abraham Lincoln, this concert will celebrate the awe-inspiring spirit of America. From Copland’s Long Time Ago & At the River to five selections from Thompson’s Frostiana, this performance will also include orchestral songs, ballads, and spirituals. Stemming from a modest group of singers that came together to sing Christmas carols, the Sackets Harbor Vocal Arts Ensemble has grown to become a leading force in choral performance in northern New York. Past highlights for this ensemble include performances of Bach’s Magnificat, Brahms’ Requiem, Brubeck’s La Fiesta de la Posada, Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, and Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem.
